A week without plastic

Day 1:

Brushing our teeth:

We got up and went to brush our teeth. Only to realise that our toothbrushes were plastic. Luckily we had ordered two bamboo toothbrushes and a floss from the bam&boo. I honestly did not enjoy the material of the toothbrush as I was not used to using wood/bamboo. However my peer enjoyed them. I loved the floss and I am looking forwards to using it again.

Breakfast:

We started making breakfast. We decided that we needed something fresh to start off the day and collected some of our hand picked avocados, a perfect way to go without plastic. We then got the bread out... Wrapped in plastic! We look all over the cupboard for an alternative but realise that we have to go with it. Having already broken the rule once in 2 minutes we look for oil and seeds to put on our toast. We find chia seeds in a cardboard bag and olive oil in a glass bottle. We eat and drink water from the filter system.

Lunch:

For lunch we had scrambled eggs as they were the only thing we could find that was not covered in 2 layers of plastic. We made them out of 4 eggs with no other herbs or taste than salt and oil as everything in my fridge was covered in plastic.

Shopping:

We initially went shopping to get the ingredients for pizza but we quickly realised we also need ingredients for days 2 lunch. We bought a pasta packet that was in a cardboard box but even that had a plastic window, we ignored it and searched for the other ingredients, We then looked for mushrooms, flour, pineapple, cheese, cocoa powder, sugar. salami and ham (my brother also wanted pizza).

- As it is not mushroom season we never found mushrooms that were not covered in plastic. We used ones that I already had at home as we did not want them to be put to waste.

- Pineapple was easy as they do not need any coverage because of their natural skin.

- flour, sugar and cocoa powder were quite easy because they were found in either cardboard or metal containers.

- Cheese, salami and ham were the hardest because of their over packed state. We had to cheat with the cheese as we cannot make pizza without cheese. We found salami and ham over at the dish where they cut it fresh for us.

Dinner:

We started making our pizzas whilst changing baking paper for foil and making minor changes. After this challenge this will definitely be worth researching as we don't want to double the waste by using products that are worse for the environment. We finished the pizzas and started going to bed.

Washing our hair:

We researched the plastic alternatives for shampoo and conditioner. We came across a shampoo alternative of baking soda and vinegar, it worked to an extent but I would not recommend it for everyday use. For conditioner we found no alternative apart from using coconut oil before washing your hair. The only way you could avoid this is by purchasing products in metal bottles like this brand beneath.

Day2:

Breakfast:

For breakfast we made pancakes as flour, sugar and eggs can all be found in cardboard containers.

Lunch:

For lunch we had pasta with corn and tuna that we bought the day before. The corn and the tuna were in metal containers when the pasta was in a cardboard box with a plastic window (that we recycled).
